In India, you need to register at the FRRO or
Foreign Registration Regional Office within the 14 days of your arrival, but
only in the case if you decide to spend more than 180 days in the country.
Else, the registration is not needed if you are here for a shorter term than
the time mentioned. Here are few advices for the registration process at the
FRRO:
Collect your documents
Prior going to register yourself, you will need some
documents for that, such as: your rent agreement, Bonafide letter, the copy of
your passport and visa. But if you live in other cities i.e Pune, they may
request you to bring your C’ Letter, and the letter from the police which will
be in a sealed envelope that you should not OPEN at ANY COST, destined for the FRO
only.
Make an appointment
Well, in that case, I will take the example of
Delhi, here we need to go to a cyber coffee near the FRRO office to apply online
yourself for the appointment, it will cost you around 200-250 INR. Please note
that you will need to bring your documents as it has to be uploaded on the
website. You will be given a print out paper that you will need to add with
your document, that paper form will contains all the details required such as
the time and date you must go at the FRRO, and all the other details mentioned
on your documents (passports, address in Delhi, passport photo).
Please note: this is the case only for people living
in Delhi; however, for others you can go at the FRRO at any day between 9 am-
5m, except weekend, to register yourself. Also please, if you are staying in
India, for more than 180 days, you need to register within 14 days or else, they will
likely charge you at least 1400 INR depending on the city you will live in.
How to make your way to the FRRO
Well, for that, you can use either, UBER/OLA by
downloading it on your smartphone. But the best way is to ask your friend or
your counselor, to help you to go there and help you with the process. Believe
me it’s quite an experience by itself, here is the link for the addresses of
the FRRO for different cities: http://boi.gov.in/?q=node/245
Please feel free to add anything that I left out in
the comment section that would be helpful too.
